Suitability before selectivity

The right school begins with understanding the student.

A school decision should bring ambition and suitability together. Academic level matters, but so do personality, learning environment, maturity, family circumstances, and opportunities created later.

  1. Academic suitability

Attainment, curriculum strengths, and the level of demand the student is ready for

  2. Personal suitability

Character, confidence, interests, pastoral needs, and environment fit

  3. Family circumstances

Location, siblings, travel, guardianship, language, time spent nearby

  4. Future direction

Sixth Form options, exam routes, and university or career possibilities

Entry points

Entry points differ, and so does the preparation.

  • Prep & Junior

Early entry and moves between systems.

Age 4+ entry, school transitions, system moves, family relocation

  • Senior School

    The main competitive entry points.

11+, 13+, GCSE and equivalent, each with its own assessment and timeline

  • Boarding

Reputation does not make a school right

Academic, emotional, and practical readiness — including independence and communal living

  • Sixth Form

Two years that shape university options.

A-Level, IB and other routes chosen relative to future degree applications

UK & Swiss boarding

Two systems, compared around the student.

Echos advises families on boarding in both the UK and Switzerland. The two systems offer different academic cultures, boarding environments, and philosophies.

Comparison is made relative to the student rather than defaulting to one country.

Discuss boarding options

From shortlist to decision

“An offer changes the question from ‘Can the student enter?’ to ‘Should the student go?’”

Seven stages from first understanding through to successful transition — each one building on the last.

  1. Understand

Build a detailed picture of the student, family context, and reason for considering a move

  2. Research & shortlist

Explain the school landscape; identify a focused, realistic group of options

  3. Visit & compare

Prepare families to compare academic culture, pastoral life, boarding, and daily reality

  4. Assessment preparation

Develop familiarity and readiness without producing a rehearsed child

  5. Application coordination

Manage timelines, documentation, and school communication throughout

  6. Offer & decision

Compare environment, conditions, support, and what each offer enables later

  7. Transition

Prepare the academic, personal, and practical move; continued support where valuable

Visas & relocation

For younger students, a school decision can become a family decision.

Echos can support school admissions alongside relevant visa processes and relocation planning. Eligibility depends on individual circumstances and current immigration rules.

  1. Child Student visa

Student’s own immigration route, tied to the school and course of study

  2. Parent of a Child Student visa

Route for an eligible parent to accompany a younger child, subject to current rules

  3. Sibling school planning

Coordinating applications, year groups, and locations for multiple children

  4. Relocation & practical coordination

Timing, housing, guardianship, and practical sequencing around the academic year

Schools & Boarding

A beginner’s guide to the UK education system.

Understanding Key Stages provides context when comparing entry points, curricula, and subject choices in England.

Key Stages in the English education system
StageYearsAgeAssessment
KS1Year 1–25–7Phonics Screening, Teacher Assessments
KS2Year 3–67–11SATs in English & Maths, Teacher Assessments
KS3Year 7–911–14Teacher Assessments, Internal Progress Tests
KS4Year 10–1114–16GCSEs in English, Maths, Science and other subjects
KS5Year 12–1316–18A-Levels, IB, BTEC, Vocational qualifications

Exact routes depend on age, curriculum, timing, and institutional availability. Plans should connect the immediate school decision to later subject and university options.

A-Levels vs IB

The stronger route is the one that fits the student.

Universities recognise both A-Levels and the IB, but individual courses may have subject-specific requirements. Curriculum choice should be part of the wider pathway.

A-Levels

Specialisation in three or four subjects — depth over breadth

  • Clear subject direction
  • Flexibility in combination
  • Strong for specialist degrees

IB Diploma

Six subjects maintained across disciplines — breadth and structure

  • Valued for breadth
  • Supports undecided direction
  • Extended Essay & CAS

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Do you only work with boarding schools?
Both day and boarding options are advised on. Format follows the student and family context rather than any institutional preference.
Will you recommend only the most selective schools?
No. Selectivity is not a substitute for suitability. We look for the school where this student is likely to do well and be well taught.
Can you help when a child is already unhappy at school?
Yes. We first understand the source of the difficulty and whether a move, targeted support or both would be the responsible response.
Can you support visas and family relocation?
Yes. For eligible international families, Echos can support both the school admissions and relevant visa application processes, including Child Student visas and Parent of a Child Student visas, alongside wider family relocation planning. Eligibility depends on individual circumstances and current immigration rules.
